NOTESOr, put another way, a clear signal that I listened to Horses by Patti Smith a lot. The Reason Why was certainly the moment that, of our recorded output, summed up my personal attitude the most. When we started, I wanted to play for the freaks: the physically disabled, the ugly, the mentally ill. When the Smiths came out, I saw them as a watered down version of us in this respect: Morrisey might have worn a hearing aid on TOTP, but he still looked like he spent years in front of the mirror with his hairdo. Following the freak theme, I also wanted us to play unusual places: prisons, mental hospitals, wherever wasn't usual. But in the end we just weren't organised enough. The bass line at the end, incidentally, was ripped off a band called Modern English. |
