It's a bit disingenuous to call the Steroids a 'straight ahead punk band'. We were nothing like most of the bands we played with - I could write a book about the great times we had in the Steroids. Our motto was 'ability stinks' and we took the DIY ethic to extremes, even within the punk scene. Our bassist Steve ended up playing gigs with one string on the bass - 'the fat one at the top' as he called it...there was never any need for more.

But despite all this, The Steroids were extremely popular, perhaps because we kept away from the prevailing winds of the time, which were beginning to manifest in the likes of the Exploited and co on one side, and the po-faced right-on folk on the other. Above all, and without being a comedy band, the Steroids were fun.
