Reg Varney RIP
Monday, November 17th, 2008On The Buses’ Reg Varney dead at 92
Veteran British comedy actor Reg Varney, best known for 1970′s sitcom On The Buses, has died aged 92.
His daughter said Varney had died after a short illness at a nursing home in Devon.
Jeanne Marley said her father died “peacefully”.
In On The Buses, which ran for seven series on ITV and spawned three movie spin-offs, East End-born Varney played cheeky cockney driver Stan Butler.
Starring alongside Bob Grant’s conductor Jack Harper, their run-ins with bus inspector Cyril ‘Blakey’ Blake were a major part of the show’s comedy.
Before getting his big break in On The Buses, Varney, born in 1916, worked in working men’s clubs and music halls, while in the second world war he joined the Royal Electrical Engineers.
He is survived by his daughter, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
